 Annual:  $88,442.99--$134,576.47                     

Hourly:  $42.52/hr.--$64.70/hr.                  

JOB SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for managing the city’s engineering functions and for providing professional  engineering support for a variety of city projects.

MAJOR DUTIES:  Provides engineering support for a variety of department projects and for project specific to other city departments.   Develops and ensures compliance with engineering standards, guidelines, specifications, and procedures.  Coordinates the work or city personnel and external contractors engaged in complex engineering projects.  Develops recommendations for facilities, funding, personnel, equipment, materials, and contract services related to department projects.  Initiates and maintains contact with key engineers and officials, or other organizations and companies.  Prepares a variety of technical engineering construction documents.   Inspects and reviews all land, site, and public works projects as a licenses professional engineer and ensures compliance with industry standards and other guidelines.  Designs and/or programs software to create construction documents or communications between internal departments.  Inspects field work in progress and upon completion.  Supervises and participates in the resolution of difficult or unusual engineering problems.  Performs related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:   18 year or older.  High School Diploma, GED and/or equivalent work experience.   Valid Alabama Driver’s license.   BS degree in a course of study related to the occupational field. Experience usually associated with one to three years’ experience or service.  Certification as a Professional Engineer.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:     Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures.  Knowledge of state and federal regulations and standards for public works infrastructure design.  Knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices.  Knowledge of city ordinances and codes.  Skill in performing engineering computations and in preparing engineering designs.  Skill in using independent judgment and discretion.  Skill in prioritizing, scheduling, and delegating assignments.  Skill in operating modern office equipment.  Skill in analyzing, interpreting, and preparing reports.  Skill in oral and written communication.  Skill in working under pressure and meeting deadlines.  Skill in exercising professional engineering judgment to achieve results consistent with objectives.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:   The work consists of varied engineering, inspection, and project management duties. The need to balance a variety of competing interests and priorities contributes to the complexity of the work.  The purpose of this position is to perform engineering duties in support of design and construction of city infrastructure and improvement projects. Successful performance contributes to a safe, well-maintained, and efficient city infrastructure.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.  The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather.  The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use or protective devices such as masks, goggles, or globes.  Physical strength, ability, and mobility to perform all essential job functions with or without accommodation.  Must be willing to work, non-standard work hours, holidays, shifts, and weekends as necessary.  Must be willing to be on-call.
