BUILDING INSPECTOR I or II

PUBLIC WORKS--BUILDING DEPARTMENT

Classification: Classified, non-exempt Grade 16 or 17 (dependent on experience and skills)   

Building Inspector I:   Grade 16    Base Hourly:  $23.51/hr.--$35.77/hr.      Base Annual:  $48,897.95--$74,404.01

Building Inspector II:   Grade 17   Base Hourly:  $24.70/hr.--$37.58/hr.      Base Annual: $51,373.41--$78,170.72

Job Summary:  This position is responsible for scheduling, coordinating, and conducting building inspections to ensure compliance with codes and ordinances. An incumbent  in this position may be designated “Building Inspector II.”

Major Duties:    Performs residential inspections to ensure and enforce compliance with city building codes and ordinances; performs commercial inspections as assigned.  Documents inspections and maintains related files and records.  Issues stop work orders to homeowners and contractors; conducts re-inspections to ensure corrections have been made.  Conducts research into building codes to answer job site questions and issues.  Provides information to the public regarding building codes and ordinances; responds to customer complaints and problems.  Issues building permits as needed.  Attends required continuing education and training.  Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:   18 year or older.  High School Diploma, GED and/or equivalent work experience.   Valid Alabama Driver’s license. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years’ experience or service.  Possession of ICC inspection certifications in building, plumbing, electrical, gas, mechanical, and plan review.

Knowledge Required By The Position:   Knowledge of construction methods and materials common to commercial, industrial, and residential construction projects.  Knowledge of building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and other codes.  Knowledge of building inspection and code enforcement principles and practices.  Knowledge of the streets and geography of the city.   Skill in interpersonal communication.   Skill in interpreting codes accurately and effectively.  Skill in analyzing permanent structures to determine conformity with established codes.   Skill in verbal and written communication.  Skill in reading and interpreting plans and specifications.  Skill in developing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Complexity/Scope Of Work:   The work consists of varied plan review, construction inspection, and code enforcement duties. Strict regulations, combined with the unique nature of each case in question, contribute to the complexity of the work.  The purpose of this position is to perform building inspections in the enforcement of building codes. Successful performance ensures compliance with all relevant building codes and ordinances.  

Physical Demands/ Work Environment:   The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects and climbs ladders.  The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, and grease. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc. Physical strength, ability, and mobility to perform all essential job functions with or without accommodation.   Must be willing to work overtime, non-standard work hours, holidays, shifts, and weekends as necessary.  Must be willing to be on-call.
