JOB SUMMARIES:  This position performs technical duties in the maintenance of parks and recreation facilities and grounds

MAJOR DUTIES:  

TECH I:     Assists in maintaining athletic fields and in preparing fields for play, including dragging, raking, chalking, painting, mowing, and drying fields for games; installs temporary fences and tarps.  Maintains SportsPlex property; mows grass and cuts weeds; places gravel around track; maintains tennis courts; clears brush and trims trees; empties trash receptacles and collects litters; applies herbicides and pesticides.  Cleans and sanitizes public restrooms.  Maintains walking trails; replaces gravel; trims trees and removes fallen limbs; removes debris from storm drains; empties trash receptacles and collects litters; maintains landscaping.  Operates lawn mower, chainsaws, weed trimmers, and other grounds maintenance equipment.  Inspects and repairs playground equipment.  Cleans and maintains department vehicles.  Performs related duties.

TECH II:   Performs electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and other maintenance and repair tasks at all city parks, athletic fields, concession stands, walking trails, buildings, etc.  Maintains swimming pool; checks water levels; performs chemical tests and adjusts chemicals as needed.  Maintains and repairs irrigation systems; maintains irrigation schedules.  Winterizes water lines, faucets, and restrooms.  Cleans and sanitizes public restrooms.  Assists in maintaining athletic fields and in preparing fields for play, including chalking, painting, mowing, and drying fields for games.  Installs and maintains landscaping.  Assists in setting up bleachers, electrical lines, water lines, and other elements for special events.  Operates a bucket truck to repair lights, repairs nets, trim trees, etc.  Assists the supervisor in developing annual budget requests; maintains records of supplies used.  Inspects and repairs playground equipment.  Maintains walking trails.  Assists in maintaining cemetery grounds.  Maintains flags and pole lights.  Maintains tennis court surfaces.  Maintains water features and cleans as needed.  Performs related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:   18 year or older.  High School Diploma, GED and/or equivalent work experience.   Valid Alabama Driver’s license.  Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.  Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Class B commercial driver’s license issued by the State of Alabama for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:   Knowledge of grounds maintenance principles.  Knowledge of sports field maintenance principles.  Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance principles.  Skill in the operation of grounds maintenance equipment.  Skill in the operation of a hand and power tools.  Skill in problem solving.  Skill in prioritizing and planning.  Skill in oral and written communication.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:    The work consists of related technical maintenance duties. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.  The purpose of this position is to maintain department facilities and grounds. Success in this position contributes to the provision of safe, attractive, and well-maintained recreation facilities for use by the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.   The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts.  Physical strength, ability, and mobility to perform all essential job functions with or without accommodation.   Must be willing to work overtime, non-standard work hours, holidays, shifts, and weekends as necessary.  Must be willing to be on-call.
