JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for reading and recording usage data from utility meters. An incumbent in this position may be designated “Meter Reader II.”

MAJOR DUTIES:   Reads gas, water, and electric meters along an assigned route.  Operates a handheld device to record meter readings.  Changes out meters as assigned; installs and uninstalls meters.   Identifies and reports leaks and outages.  Assists customers as needed; responds to customer questions and complaints.   Manages route logistics; assigns new accounts in order to improve efficiency.  Assists in the management of customer accounts.  Cleans and maintains assigned vehicle.  Assigns permanent account numbers for new customers according to the area in which they live.  Monitors meters for theft of services.  Performs related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:   18 year or older.  High School Diploma, GED and/or equivalent work experience.   Valid Alabama Driver’s license.  Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:   Knowledge of city and county streets and geography.   Knowledge of customer service principles and practices.  Knowledge of meter reading principles and practices.  Knowledge of meter installation principles.  Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.   Skill in problem solving.  Skill in prioritizing and planning.  Skill in interpersonal relations.  Skill in oral and written communication.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:   The work consists of related meter reading and customer service duties. Inclement weather and field conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.  The purpose of this position is to read meters in order to record customer usage data. Success in this position contributes to accuracy of customer billing.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.   The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold, hot, or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, machinery with moving parts, domestic and wild animals, and other field hazards. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.  Physical strength, ability, and mobility to perform all essential job functions with or without accommodation.  Must be willing to work overtime, non-standard work hours, holidays, shifts, and weekends as necessary.  Must be willing to be on-call.
