JOB SUMMARY:  This position gathers information from customers and developers in order to design power distribution lines to meet those needs.

MAJOR DUTIES:  Meets with customers to identify needs and to develop solutions to meet those needs.  Designs commercial and residential electrical distribution lines.  Generates aid to construction costs for residential and commercial customers.  Assists in the coordination of fault mitigation devices.  Performs structural analysis on existing and new infrastructure.  Repairs damaged infrastructure and restores power in emergencies.  Utilizes GPS equipment to serve design needs.  Oversees the installation and construction of new overhead and underground electric utilities.  Inspects new electric installations to ensure compliance with standards and specifications. Establishes and assists in the designation and recording of new easements.  Locates underground utility lines.  Performs related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  18 year or older.  High School Diploma, GED and/or equivalent work experience.  Valid Alabama Driver’s license.  Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.  Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.  Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Class B commercial driver’s license issued by the State of Alabama for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:   Knowledge of pole framing, electrical codes, transformer sizing, load balancing, wire sizing, etc.  Knowledge of city electrical distribution and transmission systems and procedures.  Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures.  Knowledge of high voltage transmission systems.  Knowledge of electrical codes and standards.  Knowledge of engineering economics.  Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.  Knowledge of the easement acquisition process.  Skill in the operation of a variety of job-related tools and equipment.  Skill in the use of GIS equipment and software.  Skill in problem solving.  Skill in prioritizing and planning.  Skill in interpersonal relations.  Skill in oral and written communication.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:   The work consists of varied technical duties. Rapid growth and the unique needs of each customer contribute to the complexity of the position.  The purpose of this position is to design new electrical distribution lines.   Successful performance results in the safe, reliable, and economic supply of power to customers.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, utilizes the sense of smell, and distinguishes between shades of color.  The work is typically performed in an office, at other department facilities, or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and electrical hazards. Work requires the use of personal protective equipment.  Physical strength, ability, and mobility to perform all essential job functions with or without accommodation.   Must be willing to work overtime, non-standard work hours, holidays, shifts, and weekends as necessary.  Must be willing to be on-call.
