JOB SUMMARY:   This position provides specialized support for information technology end-users.  An incumbent in this  position may be designated “Senior System Support Specialist.”

MAJOR DUTIES:    Provides specialized support for information technology users.  Provides supports for computers, laptops, cell phones, printers, copiers, and other hardware.  Provides support for a wide variety of software programs and databases.   Supports Active Director and DNS physical and virtual servers.  Installs new servers and assists in the migration process.  Manages camera systems and provides access control; prints identification badges.  Configures and installs switches.  Installs network cables and mounts television monitors.  Performs related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:   18 year or older.  High School Diploma, GED and/or equivalent work experience. Valid Alabama Driver’s license.   Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.   Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:  Knowledge of the installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of variety of information technology software, hardware, and peripherals.  Knowledge of information technology customer support services principles.  Knowledge of physical and virtual servers.  Knowledge of camera systems.  Skill in the provision of support services to a variety of end users.  Skill in problem solving.  Skill in prioritizing and planning.  Skill in interpersonal relations.  Skill in oral and written communication.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:   The work consists of varied user support and technical duties. Frequent changes to technology and the variety of IT systems deployed throughout the city contribute to the complexity of the position.  The purpose of this position is to provide information technology customer support services. Successful performance helps ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of all city operations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.  The work is typically performed in an office or computer room. Physical strength, ability, and mobility to perform all essential job functions with or without accommodation.  Must be willing to work overtime, non-standard work hours, holidays, shifts, and weekends as necessary.  Must be willing to be on-call.
