City of Hoover - Mayor Brocato's Weekly Update For February 3, 2023

February 6, 2023

One year ago this month, the Hoover Parks and Recreation department underwent a major transition as longtime Hoover employee, Erin Colbaugh, took over as director.

One year later, Colbaugh held a department wide gathering to celebrate her staff and thank them for their hard work and dedication.

"As leaders we often give directives and expect tasks to be accomplished. I don’t take the time to say thank you enough for what employees do on a daily basis. This is a time to reflect on all the accomplishments of the department over the last year," Colbaugh told the group.

One of the biggest accomplishments Colbaugh acknowledges among the team is going through a restructuring process that created six main divisions: athletics, administration, events, recreation, the Hoover Senior Center and park maintenance.

Colbaugh says another accomplishment connected to that was bringing the staff together as a whole and collaborating internally to work efficiently in engaging with the Hoover community.

She is also proud of the staff for working together to develop a "Why Statement" that helps the team stay focused on their daily goal.  That statement: Hoover Parks and Recreation exist to unite the community by providing enriching opportunities that serve everyone.

“We can all be together as one unit knowing what our purpose is as we provide services for the citizens of Hoover," she says.

Friday's celebration included cake, a video highlighting the year and employee awards.

Looking to the year ahead, Colbaugh says she and the department are excited about the Parks and Public Spaces Comprehensive Plan that they will develop this year.

"I am excited to start the community engagement aspect of it - getting out and talking to residents and community members as we develop the plan to move forwards in the coming years," Colbaugh explains.

"We want to be engaging with the community and providing them with the services and programming they want to see.”
