Do you have any old paint taking up space in your garage? What about that old TV you never threw out? This weekend is your chance to get rid of it all as the City of Hoover holds Household Hazardous Waste Day tomorrow, Saturday, September 16, 2022.

The event will continue to be held at its new location which is the Hoover Public Safety Center located at 2020 Valleydale Road. The hours are 8 am to 12 noon. In the past, cars have begun to line up as early as 7 am.

As for items that are permissible, City officials point you back to your garage where a lot of those materials tend to pile up. Acceptable items include: household chemicals, pesticides, automobile fluids, electronics, tires. Old flags are acceptable. The City turns those over to local boy scout troops who dispose of them properly. Also, Hoover Police will be on hand to collect medications, ammunitions and guns.

As for the preparation of items, attendees are asked to make sure bottles are closed tight, lids are secure and loose items are boxed while they're being transported. Once on site, crews will remove the items from the vehicle. There is no need for participants to get out of their car.

The City held its first HHWD in 1999 at the Hoover Met Complex. As time progressed and activity picked up at the Complex's Finley Center, City officials made the decision to move the event to the PSC in 2021. That same year, they also made the decision to hold HHWD twice a year, both in the fall and spring.

When it comes to disposing the collected items, for years the City has used MXI – an environmental group out of North Carolina.  MXI directs all household materials that are  collected to various programs used for beneficial reuse or recycling. MXI also operates its own latex paint recycling facility.

CITY'S GEORGETOWN LAKE PARK OFFICIALLY REOPEND THIS WEEK

The three-acre park recently underwent a $70,000 renovation project that included new decking around the park, new lumber on the gazebo, and refurbished benches. There 13-year old fountain was also replaced. That's in addition to lighting upgrades that took place a while back.
