SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK

ROOTED IN HISTORY: Mayor Battle was honored to speak Friday morning during the opening of Historic Huntsville Foundation's latest exhibition, "Brick by Brick: The Legacy of Henderson and Daniel Brandon" at Harrison Brothers Hardware. The free exhibit tells the story of one family’s path from enslavement to freedom, highlighting their journey as they established Huntsville’s most successful Black-owned business in the Post-Reconstruction era. “Brick by Brick” runs through Sept. 15, and is available for viewing Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. more

TRANSFORMATIVE PLACEMAKING

Huntsville understands how a strong music economy can create jobs, bolster talent and skills, enhance tourism and improve quality of life. That’s why Huntsville was asked to participate in a free Brookings Institution virtual event this week. Mayor Battle and Huntsville singer-songwriter Victoria Jones discussed how creating robust music ecosystems can transform and improve cities in a variety of ways. more

2023 WASHINGTON UPDATE

Mayor Battle joined the Chamber of Commerce's Washington Update luncheon featuring Sen. Tommy Tuberville at the Von Braun Center on Wednesday. Sen. Tuberville updated our community on critical business, NASA and military issues pending in Congress that will impact local economic development and national security. more

FUTURE CITY COMPETITION

Team members with the Academy for Science & Foreign Language Future City Competition stopped by City Hall on Thursday to meet with Mayor Battle and be recognized for their recent project, which included creating a city set 100 years in the future. The students also won an award for Most Inventive Use of City Planning by the Alabama Society of Professional Land Surveyors. Good job!

THINKING AHEAD
Joined by Huntsville Utilities President/CEO Wes Kelley and Tennessee Valley Authority Board Member Joe Ritch, Mayor Battle participated in a panel this week to discuss the need for increased power generation given Huntsville's growth. They also discussed the new Huntsville Environmental Sustainability Committee, established by Mayor Battle to provide an actionable program for moving forward with communitywide sustainability efforts.

NEW BOARD CHAIR

Congratulations to the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce’s new 2023 Board Chair, Lynn Troy. Former Board Chair Greg Brown officially passed the gavel this month to Troy, who is also president and founder of Troy 7, a subsidiary of Yulista. We look forward to working with Ms. Troy and thank Mr. Brown for his service.  more
