Alabama Beaches’ Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail received national recognition on Friday, Feb. 17, 2023 when USA Today’s 10Best announced their Readers’ Choice Award winners for “Best Recreational Trail.”
Winning the nationwide competition, the 28+ mile trail – spanning nine ecosystems through Gulf Shores, Gulf State Park and Orange Beach – beat out a lengthy list of national competitors, including the Great Allegheny Passage (Cumberland, Md. to Pittsburgh, Penn.) and Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes in Idaho, to earn the coveted title.
“We are excited that USA Today’s readers have chosen the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail inside Gulf State Park as the number one recreational trail in the U.S.,” said Chris Blankenship, Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. “Alabama has a wide diversity of natural landscapes, and our recreational trails are the best way to explore the state from its mountainous northeast to its coastal habitats. We encourage everyone to visit Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Gulf State Park to check out the Backcountry Trail for themselves.”
Nominees for all categories in the 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards are chosen by a panel of relevant experts which include a combination of editors from USA TODAY; editors from 10Best.com; relevant expert contributors; and sources for both these media and other Gannett properties. “Gulf Shores and Orange Beach have made the top ten list for several 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards in the past, including Best Small Beach Town and Best Small Town Food Scene,” explained Beth Gendler, President & CEO of Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism. “Having our trail nominated by the experts and then chosen as the top recreational trail in the United States further confirms that Alabama’s Gulf Coast is truly more than just a beach. This award is a testament to the vision and partnerships of our two cities, Gulf State Park, and our state conservation and natural resources team.”
Gendler added, “I remember when the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail program started, and to watch as it has grown in mileage and popularity shows the value of and interest in outdoor recreation activities among our residents and visitors. It is such a tremendous asset to our community.”
Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon echoed Gendler’s sentiment.
“The public investments in our Backcountry Trail here on the Alabama Gulf Coast have paid off for nearly two decades,” said Mayor Kennon. “We started with one section less than two miles long and now have a trail system reaching nearly 30 miles, connecting the City of Orange Beach to our 6,150-acre Gulf State Park and to our sister city, Gulf Shores. People clearly come to our destination seeking the beautiful beaches, but the trail system now attracts people who love to experience our coastal wilderness just minutes from the beach. Once on the trails, you experience a whole new world away from the busyness of the main highways, and we see the positive feedback from our visitors and residents. We have nearly 8 million visitors to Baldwin County annually, and the number of bikers, walkers, runners, and wildlife enthusiasts is remarkable as they choose our destination because of the trails and their offerings. We are so pleased to be recognized for the decades of hard work made by our staff
and community into this special amenity."?
For Gulf Shores Mayor Robert Craft, the Backcountry Trail provides a vital balance between development and nature.
“The Backcountry Trail provides the opportunity to experience the way the Gulf Coast was prior to the development of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach,” said Craft. “Gulf State Park and the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail system are an amazing buffer to the developed coast and creates a vital balance between the natural environment and our developed communities.”
For one Orange Beach city employee, the development of the trail and its new recognition is personal.
“When we were first developing the trail system and only had six trail spurs open, we were worried about advertising the trail to the public because we didn't want them to be 'underwhelmed',” explained Phillip West, Coastal Resources Director for the City of Orange Beach. “Fast forward 15 years, and now we have the honor of being named Best Recreational Trail in the country by USA Today's readers! We would not have won this award without our Maintenance Supervisor Brad Johnson and his team and their dedication, hard work, and passion they bring each and every day to keep the Orange Beach-maintained portion of the trail safe, beautiful, and accessible year-round.”
West continued, “We appreciate?everyone?voting for the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry?Trail, and it seems fitting that Mr. Branyon's legacy lives on with a project that is so popular and appreciated?by so many. On Friday, the Coastal Resources Department held a "watch party" for city staff in the Council Chambers as the “Best Recreational Trail" award was officially announced at 11 a.m.
Coastal Resources' Brad Johnson, Recreation Facility Maintenance Coordinator, and Phillip West, Director, celebrate the award.
Being nominated as one of the Top 10 trails in the country was worth a celebration, but being voted No. 1 was icing on the cake!

Mardi Gras has officially been celebrated for over 30 years in Orange Beach. The first parade was organized in 1993 and the good times continue to roll.

Saturday, February 18th
The Mystics of Pleasure parade and The Marshals will start rolling at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 18th on the normal Perdido Beach Boulevard route, traveling east from Wolf Bay Lodge to the 161/beach highway intersection just past the Publix shopping center.
Monday, February 20th
The Wharf’s Annual "Moon Pies on Main" parade and outdoor activities will be held on Monday, February 20th on Main Street. A Kid and Pet Parade kicks off the fun at 4 p.m., followed by activities and an evening float parade at 6 p.m. For details, go to go.alwharf.com/MoonPiesOnMain.

31st Annual Seafood Festival and Car Show
The Annual Orange Beach Seafood Festival and Car Show (https://www.orangebeachal.gov/428/Seafood-Fest?utm_source=City+of+Orange+Beach+Community+Newsletter&utm_campaign=fa259445f7-Jan.+5%2C+2018+City+Newsletter%2C+Vol.+1+Issue+1_COPY_&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_50a576ca9e-fa259445f7-171456508) will return to the Wharf on Saturday, February 25, 2023. The 31st annual event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature the festival's first-ever Makos on Main parade with students and a Mako Mudbug Mania crawfish-eating contest.
The festival is the major fundraising event for the Makos Academics Arts & Athletics Club (MAAAC), which directly benefits Orange Beach schools. The original Orange Beach Sports Association, which started the Red Snapper Festival, was rolled into MAAAC when the new Orange Beach Middle/High School opened in 2019.
The annual festival features a full day of delicious food, 100+ artists from throughout the South, and music for the whole family to enjoy on two stages. In addition, there is a large Kids' Zone with activities, and a huge car show - featuring antique, classic and hot rod vehicles all along Main Street.
There is no admission charge to the event and plenty of parking. Volunteers from Orange Beach schools help park cars and donations are accepted in support of our schools.
Car Show
Each year, the open car show features antique, classic and hot rod vehicles. For 2023, the registration fee per car is $75 in advance and $100 day of the show. The lineup begins at 8 a.m. on the day of the event. All vehicles must be in place by 9:30 a.m. Awards are presented to Top 10 cars. There will also be goody bags and prize drawings throughout the day.

Arbor Day tree giveaway returns Feb. 25
The City of Orange Beach will observe Arbor Day with the annual tree giveaway on Saturday, February 25th from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Trees will be given away in front of the Orange Beach Community Development building at 4101 Orange Beach Blvd.
The potted trees that will be given away will consist of a variety of hardwoods for citizens to plant in their yards. Some of the trees will include the following:
- Willow Oak
- Slash Pine
- Summer Red Maple
- Overcup Oak
- Shumard Oak
- Assorted evergreens
There will be a limited quantity per resident, which is defined as those who live within the city limits of Orange Beach.

2023 Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday - Feb. 24-26
Alabama will hold its 12th annual Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, beginning Friday, February 24, 2022 at 12:01 a.m. and ending Sunday, February 26, 2023 at 12 midnight, giving shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain severe weather preparedness items free of state sales tax.
A provision in the Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday law allows counties and municipalities to join the state by removing their own local sales and use taxes from the same items during the same weekend.
The Alabama Department of Revenue has compiled a list of all cities and counties participating in the 2023 Severe Weather Preparedness Tax Holiday. Orange Beach and Baldwin County are participating in the Sales Tax Holiday. The full list of participating cities and counties is available at

- Cellular phone battery

- Portable self-powered or battery-powered radio, two-way radio, weather-band radio or NOAA weather radio

Registration is now open for Spring 2023 Orange Beach Youth Baseball, Softball, T-Ball, Tiny T-Ball and Sand Volleyball. Registration is open until Feb. 24th but don't wait until the last minute.

March 1 - Town Hall Meeting: Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon and the City Council invite the public to a Town Hall meeting on Wednesday, March 1st at the Orange Beach Performing Arts Center. The Town Hall will immediately follow the 5 p.m. City Council meeting and work session, which will also be at the Performing Arts Center. The mayor will give a presentation updating everyone on projects in the city, including transportation and capital improvements. As with all city town hall meetings, after presentations are done, the floor is open for anyone to ask questions.

Good luck to the Mako wrestlers Shayd Arboneaux, Hayden Scelson and Chase Sterling who are representing Orange Beach at the AHSAA State Wrestling Championships in Huntsville this weekend.
