A mellow autumn afternoon beckons people to enjoy the outdoors, and it's even better when there's music involved. Pelham Parks and Recreation is proud to announce the third annual Music in the Park series, with the largest slate of performers yet. This year's event will span four Sundays in October. All performances will be held from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm at Pelham City Park. The dates are October 9, October 16, October 23, and October 30.
Alicia Walters, Assistant Director of Pelham Parks and Recreation explained Music in the Park is a free, family-friendly event for all ages to enjoy. "This is a great way to be outdoors, relax, unplug and meet new friends," Walters said the event started in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic had forced people apart. "During that time the community was eager to get out and we were able to offer a safe, outdoor event on two Sundays in October. Last year, we expanded to three Sundays of music. We've seen the attendance grow each year, so this year, we're offering more entertainment."
This year’s lineup includes performers from four different genres of music. On October 9, the local blues, smooth jazz, and contemporary group Take 7 will kick off the Music in the Park series. Manager and drummer Otha Richardson said, “We originally started as a group of retirees just having fun. Our range of experience and exposure consists of music educators, as well as people from the fields of engineering, telecommunications, and law.” The group has played for several big events in the Birmingham area, as well as weddings and reunions.
Fans of classic rock will want to see Vinyl Rock on October 16. Lead singer Natalie Fry-Horne, along with a lineup of talented local musicians play classic rock and roll that, according to the group’s Facebook page, “adds fun to any event.”
The third event on October 23 will feature Black Sedan Band, Birmingham’s premier dance and party band. Black Sedan Band covers a wide range of songs and genres from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, and some current pop tunes. Event attendees can expect to hear classic rock, Motown, R&B, country, disco, funk, and pop. Six talented musicians make up Black Sedan Band, which features Carl Lewis as the high-energy front man.
The final performance of the season belongs to Sweet Tea Trio on October 30. The all-female harmony group made up of Alabama natives has opened for the likes of Bon Jovi and Alabama. They are currently recording a studio album, produced by their manager Kid Rock, and are continuing to write for future projects. The group has been described as “old school country with a rhinestone flair”.
In addition to great music, food trucks will be available on-site. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets, and well-mannered, leashed dogs are welcome.
"We believe that special events like Music in the Park can help strengthen and bring our community together. We want to provide a chance for residents to relax, laugh, grow, be together, and have fun," said Walters.
