Florence-Lauderdale Public Library Summer Reading Program - June 2023

From: Florence-Lauderdale Public Library
June 2, 2023

Our Summer Reading Program has a full agenda of activities for kids, teens and adults!

According to the American Library Association's website, there are noted benefits to individuals who participate in a summer reading program. These benefits include

- encouraging individuals to make reading a lifelong habit.

- drawing in reluctant readers through activities that occur during summer reading.

- enabling students to hone and grow their reading skills.

- generating interest in the local public library and books.

Because it occurs during the summer, the program can be good fun and provide an opportunity for family time.

In addition to prizes for all age groups who read a certain number of books this summer, we have developed activities to add to the joy of reading! Make sure to click on each calendar to learn details like which activities require registration. Check it out!

The Inaugural Make Music Day Florence is scheduled for June 21.

Make Music Florence is a free, citywide day of music to be held on June 21, the longest day of the year. It is a celebration of music on the summer solstice that is performed by anyone and enjoyed by everyone. You're invited to take part in the festivities and help show off our local talent and join the public celebration. The festival takes place in over 1,000 cities around the world.

Music will be "performed by anyone, enjoyed by everyone" across Florence. It's open to music makers of all ages, skill levels, and musical persuasions.

Venues, including businesses, parks, and churches, may register and request performers. Performers may register to match with possible venues.

Do you have a venue and a performer? Register your event.

As events are scheduled, they will be listed on the Make Music Florence website. Click here and check it out: makemusicday.org/Florence/

Make Music Day Florence is presented by Mayor Andrew Betterton and the Florence City Council, Florence Academy of Fine Arts, Florence-Lauderdale Public Library, Florence Arts & Museums, Florence Parks & Recreation, UNA International Affairs, Shoals Chamber of Commerce, and the Downtown Florence Alliance.
