Nature Of Work

This is a skilled position performing specialized guard, clerical and custodial work in the operation and security of the municipal jail. Employees in this position assist in the operation of the jail by controlling and performing services for the inmates on an assigned shift/tour of duty.  

 Essential Functions

 General

-Assists in booking prisoners, secures personal property and medication, and secures prisoners in confinement.

-Makes scheduled and random checks of quarters and personnel.

-Assist in fingerprinting, photos and the release of prisoners.

-Schedules visitors and transfer or movement of prisoners.

-Upon arriving to work in the jail, the officer will check with the off-going correction officer for any special instructions regarding care of prisoners.

-The first duty of the on-coming correction officer will be to check to see that all prisoners are safe and cells are not damaged or vandalized.

-Search all trusties returning from work detail or anytime a prisoner is allowed to leave the jail floor.

-Responsible for all jail paperwork during their tour of duty.

-Ensure all trustees are locked up unless there is work to be performed.

-Take a prisoner count on first and last round made by Correction Officer.

-Perform or initiate routine cleaning of the jail, changing and cleaning bed linens and cleaning police vehicles.

-During such times when prisoners are sentenced to hard labor, the correction officer will assign and oversee such prisoners in the cleaning of city vehicles, maintaining property around the Police Department, or other areas which may be assigned.

-Oversee that meals and medication are dispensed for prisoners and will report to the shift supervisor any illness, unusual circumstance, unsafe condition, or any matter that may need his attention relating to prisoners or the jail.

-Correction Officer shall be governed by all general rules and regulations covering employees of the City and all regulations and procedures established for employees of the police department.

 Minimum Qualifications And Educational Requirements

 Training and experience equivalent to: 

-High School Diploma or equivalent

-Must be 21 years of age or older

-Have at least one (1) year experience in performing work related to the operation of a Police Department. 

-Ability to learn the procedural laws governing the intake, confinement and discharge of prisoners and learn the principles and practices of penal institution management and enforcing discipline.

-Valid Alabama driver’s license with the ability to be insured by the city’s liability insurance carrier.
