Job Description

NATURE OF WORK

This is skilled work in the operation of various pieces of equipment, having complex operating requirements.  Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of the equipment that is used in these difficult construction and maintenance operations.     The operation of the equipment should be carried out using operator knowledge and the utmost safety.     Employees / operators are also responsible for the safety of other workers who assist with work performed through use of the equipment.  Importance is attached to the fact that the equipment requires more than ordinary attention to its operation to protect it from damage and to perform, the required work effectively.  In the absence of equipment operating duties, employees of this class participate in manual laboring activities.  Assignments are received in the form of general outlines or in terms of desired results and the employee is normally expected to develop work methods and routines to achieve that results.  Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion, by the Department Director, or his assistant.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 General

-Operate a mechanical street sweeping unit.

-Operate a large horsepower tractor with a mechanical side arm mowing deck.  

-Operate a large horsepower tractor with a rear tri-deck mowing attachment.

-Operate a large capacity tri-axle dump truck.  (Class A CDL would be required.)

-Operate a mechanical arm lift bucket truck.

-Operate a tractor cab / lowboy trailer unit.  (Class A CDL would be required).

-Makes routine field adjustments and repairs to equipment and assists mechanics in the maintenance and minor repair of equipment.

-Performs related work as required.

-Requires flexibility in skill sets, job assignment and applied time.

-Street maintenance operations.

-Strom drain maintenance.

-Pot hole patching

-Operates back hoes, end loaders, dump trucks, cement cutters, street sweepers, power washers.

-Tree care and maintenance.

-Use of safety equipment provided to complete assigned tasks.

 Minimum Qualifications And Educational Requirements

 Training and experience equivalent to: 

-High School Diploma

-Valid Alabama driver’s license with a Class B status and the ability to be insured by the city’s liability insurance carrier.
